Hi I'm Mat
I'm a journalist in San Francisco, California.
I'm the editor in chief of MIT Technology Review where I direct the publication's entire editorial portfolio, including the website, print magazine, podcasts, newsletters, and social. Prior to that I was an Executive Editor and San Francisco Bureau Chief at BuzzFeed News. I launched the BuzzFeed News San Francisco bureau, and hired a team of reporters and editors to create its impactful, award-winning tech desk. My portfolio grew to include managing, at various points, the company's Business, Science, Health, World, and Inequality desks, as well as our Australia bureau and Open Lab for Journalism, Technology and the Arts. Before that, I spent a decade at WIRED, where I was variously a fact-checker, contributing editor and finally a senior staff writer. I wrote numerous features, cover stories, a monthly column for the magazine, and lots of day-to-day beat stories. You may have read my story about the time I was hacked, which led Apple to implement two-factor authentication. Stories I have edited won the Pulitzer prize, Polk award, Livingston award, Mirror award, and gold and silver prizes in the AAAS Kavli awards, among others. I also made the website and meme Barack Obama is Your New Bicycle.Â
